Meet Paula K!

Hey hey! I’m Paula K and I am super excited to be part of the Lubbock Mom’s Blog! I’m a Cali girl with a big Texan heart! My husband and I have 3 crazy beautiful kids. Our girls are 12 and 4 and our son is 2 years old. We have a crazy, beautiful, messy life and I’m so thankful to be a stay at home mom. A few of my favorite things to do include wearing comfy clothes while lounging at home, crafting, repurposing furniture, and spending endless hours on Pinterest. On a more productive level, I’m obsessed with health and fitness. Working out has been a big part of my life since I was a teen. For over 6 years, I specialized in nutrition, weight loss, and functional training. My love for fitness not only allowed me to help others, but it also led me to the gym where I met my husband. It was and always will be my happy place.

Alright, let’s talk about Lubbock! About 4 years ago when my husband and I first moved here, I went into a full-blown depression. Not only had we move here from beautiful Colorado Springs, but we came to Texas knowing absolutely no one. I grew up about 45 minutes from San Francisco, which means that we were surrounded by the coast, mountains, and redwoods. Colorado Springs is known for being beautiful year round and the Rockies are magnificent even on a gloomy day. And then you have Lubbock. If I had to use one word to describe it, it would be “flat”. That is one of the main things I would change about our city. If it was up to me, I would hold off on building more restaurants and instead plant trees all over town. I would also add more family attractions. A good sized zoo and aquarium would not only entertain all age groups but it would also attract the surrounding cities, therefore adding to our local economy. For those of you who may not know, Lubbock is the 11th largest city in Texas. That is pretty darn big for us to not have more entertainment!

Don’t get me wrong, I may not love the flatness of Lubbock, but there is no way that I would raise my children anywhere else! Overall the community is great, and even though it’s a larger city, it still has a small town feel. The teachers that our children have had have been top notch, even going out of their way to make house calls!  But my favorite thing by far is that no matter where I go, I always hear children responding with “ma’am and sir.” Teaching children to respect others, our country and themselves is something that’s being forgotten in today’s society, but here in Lubbock I see and hear it everywhere.

I’ll leave you with this… there is a common saying, “lead by example.”  How are our children going to learn from us if we don’t set the example for them? Basic things like thanking a stranger for opening the door, or being the one that holds the door open, or saying “thank you ma’am” at the grocery line check out, or simply smiling and saying “have a nice day.”

Be the kind of person who you would want your children to grow up to be! Set the example.
