Five Friday Favorites: June 4th Edition

0

Friday already? Well, it’s actually my Thursday because I work tomorrow! Life of a hairstylist. There is nothing too fancy here on my Friday Favorites, but I sure would love to share them with you, so let’s get started!

1. L’oreal Voluminous False Fiber Lashes Mascara

Ok, now this mascara is the bomb. I’ve been using it for at least 12 years. I have tried EVERY brand of mascara, and not one compares to this $8 tube of magic. I am virtually allergic to everything over the counter, so this is the only piece of makeup I own that is not from Sephora. My face is super picky!

2. My Best Friend

Yeah yeah, I know we all have a best friend but do you have THE best friend? Because I most definitely do. The incredible part? For 31 years, we have shared the same first name. Kerri Rivera, RN, is the most intelligent, stubborn, hard-working, down-to-earth, amazing mother, the tell-you-like-it-is person I am honored to call MY best friend. There is rarely a day that goes by that we do not communicate in some way…text, messenger, or face to face. Not many have a person they can call at ANY time to ask a medical question or the unthinkable…when your child dies. She was there right by my side every step of the way, making decisions for me because I couldn’t and getting my husband and me away from the masses. Kerri is my person. She is my sister from another mother.

3. Sunrises

Everyone loves a beautiful sunrise. West Texas might have tornadoes, 60 mph breezes, occasional rain but dang, we have the most remarkable horizons. Almost four years ago, I don’t think I looked at them like I do now. When I am headed East to work in the mornings, I see the heavens open up, and a glimpse of my son helps create a beautiful pattern of artwork in the sky. Zane loved the weather, and when it would storm, he was the first one on the porch. The sky reminds me of my child, the sun, the clouds, the rain (it’s raining as I type this). Our sunrises are one of my few blessings left.

4. My Granny Car

It’s 2015, and I’m driving a two-door coupe Altima. I absolutely love it. Then I find out I’m going to be a Gigi! Well, this car isn’t going to work 🤷🏻‍♀️. But, I refuse to get an SUV/van. So, I get a four-door sedan, but not just any sedan, a Dodge Charger SRT392. When you become a 37-year-old Gigi, you gotta look somewhat cool. I guess it was hard for me to come to terms that my 18-year-old was becoming a dad. But 5 years later, “Christine” has been upgraded multiple times and is one heck of a Granny Car. We have magically turned into a Dodge family. We bought my Forever 16 son a Challenger; my 24-year-old has a Charger, my sister and her husband both have Challengers! It looks like she will be hanging around for a while.

5. Lululemon Capri Leggings

Yes, I know they’re expensive. But have you felt them? Seriously, have you rubbed them on your face? Butter. Just like butter. And the waistbands do not roll down! These guys are an investment. I received a pair as a gift from a client for Christmas a year ago and instantly fell in love. I had to buy another pair. Now I have 3. My days off, I live in them. And when I broke my arm, the first two weeks when I was in a sling, it was all I could wear. You can’t buckle jeans in a sling! Just try a pair; they will not disappoint.

Everyone has their own favorites they can’t live without. I have a ton more, but these are a few on the top of my list. The next time you see a West Texas sunrise, I hope you see it differently.

West Texas has always been my home, and Lubbock has been my work-home for 23 years as a hairstylist. My husband Joe and I have 4 children, Daniel (24), Zane (Forever 16), KaiDyn (13) and Riot (11). Daniel is married to Adrianna and together they have our wild and crazy 5 year old grandson Zeagan. KaiDyn and Riot, whom are siblings, are adopted and have been with us since January of 2018! Joe and I are actively involved in a Suicide Prevention and Awareness Program called #flyhighzane. In 2020 Joe left the oilfield to become self-employed owning a handyman business, Everybody Needs a Joe and Sons. I am here as a mom, a grandmother, a friend, and just someone who has been there. I'm here to talk. Favorite Restaurant: Cancun Favorite Lubbock Landmark: Hell's Gate behind Dunbar Lake (this spot was Zane's favorite) Favorite Tradition: Anything at the National Ranching Heritage Center
