When all our littles came home in March of 2020, I spent far too many hours Googling my way through homeschool resources and curricula. It was overwhelming and cost-prohibitive. I had many questions: Could I afford to homeschool? Would my son receive the same caliber of education we are fortunate to experience in the traditional classroom? What about structure, engaging and attentive educators? The list was long.
If you’ve considered homeschooling or are currently homeschooling and looking for new resources, I’d love to share Great Hearts Online.
Great Hearts Online is a full-time, tuition-free (that’s right, free) virtual public charter school open to students in grades kindergarten through eighth. What is particularly appealing to me is their classical liberal arts curriculum, including advanced math and science, robust arts, and foreign languages.
The Heart Behind Great Hearts
For 20 years, Great Hearts has served students with the same clear and steadfast purpose: to cultivate the hearts and minds of students in pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Music to this mother’s heart!
As a parent aiming to raise a critical thinker with an open mind, I love this quote from the Great Hearts philosophy:
We believe that the world is ordered and knowable and that the human intellect, while imperfect, can attain knowledge of reality through reason, hard work, and a coherent program of study.
We believe that truth exists, and we must seek it relentlessly by disciplined study and good-willed conversation. Truth is never just “my truth” and “your truth”; truth itself is not subject to historical or personal conditioning or circumstances, though individuals and cultures are.
We no longer need to associate virtual school with long hours of screen time. Great Hearts Online offers live instruction with engaging teachers in a small classroom setting. Their program provides synchronous classes Monday through Thursday with additional interactive assignments completed offline.
Great Hearts Online is currently open for enrollment for the 2022 – 2023 school year. Be sure to visit the Great Hearts Online website for more registration information and follow them on Instagram and Facebook to stay up to date with the latest!
